Suzuki�s continued status, as one of the other Japanese brands, is really quite regrettable, especially for consumers who need a sensible economical alternative and want something a little different. The perfect case-in-point is the Aerio. While so much attention is being given to Honda�s Element and Toyota�s new Scion line-up, the rarely heard-of Aerio SX is probably a better choice. Why? Well, it�s just as quirky looking, it�s even more affordable, and it drives great (considering the vehicle�s price, of course).
The Aerio sport sedans (S and GS models) are similar to Ford�s Focus and Toyota�s Echo. They�re basically compact cars with extra cargo room: just right for the younger, active buyer, who wants to schlep as much as possible, for the least amount of money, and wants to do it in a new, peer-accepted vehicle.
The Aerio SX is a sport crossover, featuring sedan, minivan and SUV characteristics. Both versions of the Aerio are easy-in and easy-out. They have fairly wide door openings and they ride high. There�s sort of an effortless quality about driving either car. You don�t have to bend low or squeeze in, or over-think the operational details needed to put the Aerio in motion. To some degree (and I say this only from the most positive of perspectives), they�re as much fun to drive as a golf cart.
The Aerio sedans and SX share other attributes as well, such as the same general appearance, molded side panels, oversized grille, halogen headlamps and prism taillights. Additional exterior features include five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, fog lamps, distinctive rear spoiler with brake light, and keyless remote entry. The Aerio SX's hatch has a gas pressure-assisted lift mechanism, extra large window with a washer/wiper, and one of the largest rear cargo entries in the small car class.
All Aerios are front-wheel drive and powered by a liter inline four-cylinder engine that delivers a respectable hp and lb.-ft. of torque (numbers that are close to the top of all vehicles in the small car class. And there�s terrific gas mileage, too. With the manual transmission in the base sedan model, you�ll get 26/33 city/highway. The optional 4-speed automatic in the sedans and SX is also very tasty at 26/31, city/highway. An all-wheel-drive model should be available by September, which will give credence to the car's "sport" claims.
The Aerio also features a zero-maintenance, self-adjusting, two-stage timing chain and distributorless direct ignition system (the only ignition system of its type in its class). Front disc brakes are standard, as are liquid-filled motor mounts, power steering and MacPherson Strut front and rear suspension.
Unfortunately, low prices do mean certain sacrifices. For example, the interiors are very simple, and very basic. Floor mats are optional equipment, even on the GS version, but because the younger market places so much emphasis on audio systems, the lack of floor mats is more than made up for with a Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo, which is standard in all Aerios. Air conditioning and power windows and mirrors are also standard. SX and GS models have power locks, cruise control and a center rear seat armrest with cupholder.
Prices for the Aerio begin below $14, That�s pretty darn good for a brand-new spunky performer.

Suzuki Vitara 4-Door
The Suzuki 4-door Vitara is not your average sedan, nor your average SUV. It's a sensible compact-SUV. A little more rugged than the Vitara 2-door convertible, Suzuki's 4-door Vitara sacrifices nothing for style and a savvy ride. With varying configurations to play with, interior volume is a roomy cubic-feet. Pack everyone and everything ineverything but the kitchen sink that is.

Under the hood of the Suzuki Vitara 4-door is a liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with horsepower @ rpm, and lb-ft of torque @ rpm. Fuel mileage on the 2-wheel drive 5-speed manual takes you an estimated miles with 23/26 (city/hwy) mpg, while the 4-wheel drive 4-speed automatic gets 22/25 (city/hwy) mpg. The Suzuki Aerio (called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a compact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different valve gasoline inline-four engines, with litre and litre, this one capable of PS (92kW; hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan ( to ) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 
Models in North America got a larger and more powerful liter engine with hp (kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (–), S and SX (), and Base and Premium (–). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new liter hp (kW; PS) engine in , a major styling and interior refresh in (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in Only the Aerio sedan remained for , as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.
In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with litre and litre I4 engine. All wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In , the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a valve version of the litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90PS (66kW; 89hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.
The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in litre and litre variants until
The Liana was best known for its appearances as the Reasonably Priced Car in Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car segment. Celebrity guests would appear on the show every week to be interviewed and to set a lap time in a saloon model Suzuki Liana. The primary car, along with spare cars, were kept stock except for a roll cage and racing seats which were added as safety measures. In its three-year tenure on Top Gear, the Liana covered 1, laps of the circuit; its tires and brakes were changed times; and it required six new clutches, two new hubs, driveshafts, wishbones, struts and gear linkages and a replacement wing mirror. The Liana was used from its first show until its replacement by a Chevrolet Lacetti in the show's spring season. Until , it enjoyed a partial retirement, and was still brought back when the guest was a Formula 1 driver.
In , Suzuki specially built spaceframe racing cars for hillclimb races with a bodyshell to resemble the Aerio dubbed the Suzuki Aerio P Pikes Peak Special driven by its rally team manager and former rally driver, Nobuhiro Tajima.
Tajima retired from the race, one mile (km) short of the finishing line suffering from mechanical failures, teammate Yutaka Awazuhara took the fourth overall in a Grand Vitara.
Tajima would finish as runner up in the All Japan Dirt Trial Championship that year with the same car and won the Race to the Sky hillclimb in , before it was rebuilt as a Grand Vitara, then in as an XL7, breaking the overall course record at Pikes Peak.
