Milk Jug Skulls

Want to get in mood for the Halloween season but don’t have enough money or time for complicated and intricate decorations? Well, with this simple craft you can create some interesting and cheap decorations.

All you’ll need to make these creepy skulls is a gallon jug and a simple clay or unmeltable skull as a guide. You can buy one at a local crafts store or online for a cheap price. A heat gun, hot glue, scissors, a sponge, ice water and a towel are also necessary, along with any decorations you want to add!

Step 1: Set up your guide skull in a safe place to use a heat gun and hot glue so you don’t accidentally set something on fire or melt something you didn’t mean to.

Step 2: Cut the handle off the jug and position the jug over the Guide skull with the long part over the face

Step 3: Wear gloves. To begin shaping the jug, set the heat gun on HIGH and begin to sculpt but holding the jug about 3 inches from the plastic until it turns clear. Once clear, you should be able to manipulate and shape it. Using your gloved hands, shape the plastic against the Guide skull and tuck at the cheekbones.

Step 4: Now begin to heat the rest of the plastic again until clear. Then grab your sponge and dip it in ice water. Press it gently against the plastic and press it to the Guide skull into shape. Push into the nose and eyes to deepen them, but be careful not to rip the plastic. The harder you push, the more detailed it will be, but watch out for tears.

Step 5: Now cut off the excess plastic under the mouth and tuck the remaining plastic to finish the jaw. Now you can cut the back of the skull to get it off the Guide skull.

Step 6: Use the masking tape to close up the open back of the skull, seams as close as possible, then use hot glue to close up the cut from the inside. Wait until the glue has cooled to remove the tape.

Congrats! You’ve now created a Milk Jug skull that you can customize to your preference!

If you choose to, you can even paint it like so:

Hopefully now you’re just a little more ready for the Halloween season!

Introduction: Milk Jug Skulls

These skulls are made with the gallon size milk, water or ice tea jugs! The plastic jug is melted and shaped over a master skull.

Step 1: Tools Needed

To get started on this fun project there are some things needed.

A RESIN master skull...found on Ebay.

Good heavy gloves

Heat gun

masking tape

hot glue gun with glue sticks

sponge

scissors, razor knife

regular screw driver

bowl of ice water with a towel

plastic gallon size milk jugs!!

Step 2: Master Skull & Stand

1. I use a resin skull, this one has the removable jaw. I made the stand with some scrap wood and a section of PVC...I drilled a hole through the bottom of the skull but it can just be glued onto the pvc. This stand makes all of the difference!

2. I added some fiberglass matting to the back and top of the master skull to help "beef up" the rear of the skull as we will be cutting off the plastic when it's done.

Step 3: Prep the Jug

Cut the handle off of the jug.

Place the jug over the skull with the long part covering the face as shown.

Step 4: Start Making the Skull

Using the heat gun on HIGH, 1st heat up the decals and peel off. This should only take a few seconds

In a circular motion hold the heat gun about 3 inches above the top and keep moving the gun until the jug starts to turn clear.

With your gloves on, pull the soft jug down to take the shape of the skull.

Then heat up the plastic just under the cheek bone until clear and "tuck" in with your gloved hand...repeat on the other side...the jug is now "locked-in"

Step 5: Detail Work

Now we go back to the top...heat again until clear and now use a sponge dipped in ice water to push the plastic into place...do small sections.

Work your way to the forehead, then each side.

Heat up the area above the cheek bone until clear and push the sponge in, repeat on the other side.

Now do the same under the cheek bone on each side.

heat the mouth area over the teeth and press the cold sponge over the teeth to get the basic shape of the mouth.

Cut off the extra plastic under the mouth, be sure to leave about 1/2 inch extra to fold under the teeth and base.

heat the nose area, when clear push the sponge into it.

Heat the eye socket and push the cold sponge into the socket...don't push in to far or the plastic will tear. Repeat on the other eye.

heat the teeth section and using the cold sponge, fold extra plastic under teeth.

Now heat the teeth again but use a small screw driver to push in between the teeth and get some detail!

Step 6: Getting the Skull Off the Master

I use some heavy duty scissors and cut up the back of the skull, once at the top I cut a small V shape. Now the back of the skull will open....facing the skull pull the open back towards you...the skull should "pop" off.

Now use some tape and get the seams as close together as possible. Using the hot glue, glue from the inside. Cover the whole seam with a good bead of hot glue. Now peel off the tape once the glue has cooled.

Step 7: Time to Paint

First I use an ivory flat spray paint and spray a good coat inside the skull.

I use some flat black spray paint on all of the lower sections...eyes, nose, mouth and around cheek bone.

Using some paint thinner I soak a sponge and wipe off the excess paint...I use the sponge with a scrub side...be careful not to take to much off.

Last is a coat of flat interior latex paint...brown..I brush it on and using a water soaked rag I "blot" off the paint....once almost dry I take the sponge and clean off the teeth a bit!

Step 8: Finish

The skulls are super light...IF using them outside I suggest spraying a bit of expanding foam in them and toss in a handful of stones.

I like to attach the skulls in clusters...you can use the hot glue but I use zip ties and screws so they won't come apart! HAVE FUN!!

Step 9: BONUS!!

So I have also started to make femur bone ends for a catacomb type display. Using a Bucky femur bone as the master, mounted to another stand. One plastic gallon jug will make two bone ends

Step 10:

Milk Jug Skull Lanterns

skull lead

Use a few materials that you might already have on hand to make these spooky milk jug skulls!

skull 1

I saw some of these on someone’s stoop the other night and thought we have got to try that!

skull 2

This simple craft calls for just a few supplies, doesn’t take long, and makes a big impact in the dark! We used

  • milk or spring water jugs (half gallon and gallon)
  • sharpie
  • sharp knife
  • LED candles

First, clean your empty milk jug with soap and water, and let it drip dry (you don’t want to smell sour milk, right?)  You may have to remove some stickers, which can be tricky!

skull 3

Next, draw a spooky skull face on your milk jug. We drew ours on the sides opposite the jug handle.  (As luck would have it, this was also the side without any sticker residue).  You can go simple or complicated with the skeleton face – I think eyes and teeth are the most important parts!

skull 4

Finally a grown-up should cut a small hole in the backside, big enough to fit a LED tealight.

skull 5

Voila! A simple but spooky Halloween lantern!

How to make a Halloween skull for less than $2.00

Currently my college friend Kim is visiting us for the week.  It's been really nice having someone else here while hubby is away.  Time just passes by much quicker when you're having fun with a friend.

And just how have we been having fun?  Well, we've been playing with Chuck... and eating... and watching tv... and crafting... a lot... a wholelot...  Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos are right around the corner, so all of our crafts have been centered around those two holidays.

I'm currently on a sugar skull kick.  I just love the way they look.  So when I was staring at an old milk jug the other day, an idea dawned on me.  Ding!  Why not use them to make some sugar skull luminaries?  So tada, here's what I came up with:

I'd seen tons of posts for ghost milk jug luminaries for awhile, so I figured this was a nice twist on that craft.  It uses skulls and colorful lights instead of ghost faces and white lights.   I just love how this little guy turned out.  He's so cute and smiley... and gosh darn it, I've just got a big ol' soft soft for any craft that involves twinkly, colorful lights.

Materials:
  •  Black Paint pen (or black Sharpie marker- but the color won't come out as dark)
  • 1/2 gallon milk jugs
  • Exacto knife / Scissors
  • Colorful Christmas lights (preferably ones that don't get too hot)

Directions:

 1.  Cut off the bottom portion of your milk jug container.  (I used an exacto knife first to pierce the plastic and then I used the scissors to cut the rest.)  Cut out a hole in the back of your luminary.  Make sure the hole is big enough to fit your plug through.

2.  Doodle your skulls on the front and sides of the luminary.

And that's it!  Now shove your Christmas lights inside, step back, and admire the happy colors and design.

They look quite magical at night, but they also create some lovely ambiance during the day too.

I love how a crappy old milk jug could make such happy room decor.  As always, happy crafting!  (Hrmm.... or should I say, happy crapting?  Tee hee hee.)

(Psst- Looking for more sugar skull crafts?  Check out these Sugar Skull Shoesor Sugar Skull Candle Holders.  They're both fun and easy to make.)
