Select Sires Inc increases share of AI market

Any local member co-operative not voting to join the newly formed unified co-operative will have the same access to genetics and programmes and will become a co-operative member of the Select Sires Co-operative.

Select Sires president and CEO David Thorbahn stated: “By uniting our federation, Select Sires Co-operative will deliver greater value and enhanced efficiencies to our 20,000 US farmer members and employees. Combining resources will result in cost-sharing benefits and allow greater investment to be diverted into research and development.

“The company continues to expand sales revenue achieving 22.5m units sold last year, a 10% increase over the previous record year of 2019. Select Sires own 2000 beef and dairy sires and the unified Select Sires Co-operative will have more than 1800 employees.”

In 2017, Select Sires previously merged with US AI company, Accelerated Genetics. The two companies had jointly purchased 'umbrella' marketing organisation, World Wide Sires (WWS) in 2001.

The California-based company is now 100% owned by Select Sires and markets semen globally to 95 countries and through 13 fully-owned subsidiaries, including World Wide Sires UK, beneath the WWS banner.

Great Company, Horrible Management

If you have your degree, you can find something better. 90% of the workers here are not motivated and have zero work ethic. Little to zero opportunity to move up and advance unless your on a good side with the VP. Starting pay and raises are never equal and your not paid nearly enough for the dangers that come with your job. Only good thing about working for Select is the PA time you earn every paycheck and the benefits. Pretty straightforward job, work bulls, clean stalls and go home. You don’t need a high school diploma to work here and there are plenty that don’t have it.

Do not work here. Terrible place to work

Employees can call you names and belittle you and nothing will happen to them. They will even get moved up to assistant supervisor afterwards. Very very poor management the bosses are friends with coworkers and it shows and it doesn’t matter if you go to upper management they don’t care as long as they are making money. Co workers will be lazy and stand around and talk while your the only one working. The only place I would recommend working at in the company as a livestock tech is the kelgren center. Would absolutely not recommend the hecker center and the export barns. Only way you will move up in the company is if you have been friends or family friends with the hire up. They will make it seem like raises are good but in all reality you are getting our the same as the people starting out even if you have been there a year. The job is dangerous for what you get paid. The turn over rate at this company is very high that alone should tell you it’s not a company to work for.

Just don’t work here

This place is so full of drama it even goes outside of the work place. It is all about who you know there and you’ll move up if you don’t know people you be at the bottom forever. They fire good works for asking for a day off but will let one go to jail for a few months while in a 90 day probation period and hold their job. When you leave or get fired they will also still involve you in drama and talk bad about you even know they never had a reason to talk about you. So end result of this place I will tell you now it’s not worth the headache and if you do try to get a job at SELECT SIRES stay out of Hecker for sure because they just start stuff and it’s not worth the headache your gonna get from it.

Ok job

Co workers were decent. Upper management didn't really care about entry level workers. Cons were some weeks you had to work 6 days a week and holidays

Livestock Technician in Plain City, OH

Good Company

It's a good job if you're willing to work hard. Managers care about their people. For the most part everyone is pretty friendly and nice. Pay is fair.

Bodenhausen and Sexson accept new roles at Select Sires Inc.

The information below has been supplied by dairy marketers and other industry organizations. It has not been edited, verified or endorsed by Hoard’s Dairyman.

The Select Sires beef department is eager to introduce two new team members, Ryan Bodenhausen and Clint Sexson. Bodenhausen, previously with Premier Select Sires, has been hired as associate vice president of beef product development and marketing. In addition to his role at All West/Select Sires, Sexson has accepted the position of large-herd beef specialist at Select Sires Inc.

“I couldn’t be more excited to add these two awesome individuals to the beef team,” said Lorna Marshall, vice president of beef programs for Select Sires Inc. “Ryan’s dairy and beef background, field experience, people management, organizational and marketing skills will be an immense asset to our growing program. Clint was trained by one of the best cattlemen in the business, the late Stan Lock. He brings outstanding stockmanship, logistics, marketing expertise and large-herd experience to this role. Both will add great value to our team and serve our farmer-owners well.”

Bodenhausen is a 2008 graduate of Kansas State University with a bachelor of science in animal science. He was hired by Southeast Select Sires, now known as Premier Select Sires, in 2012 as a beef sales representative. He then transitioned to an area sales manager role and eventually assumed the responsibilities of the southwest regional marketing manager. Bodenhausen has also served on Select Sires’ Simmental acquisition committee. His extreme passion for farmer-owner success and beef genetics have garnered him three Select Sires’ Super Achiever awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Bodenhausen resides in Muscotah, Kansas where he, his wife, Kayla, and daughters, Brinley and Bryer, raise registered Simmental cattle.

While Sexson will continue to serve farmer-owners in his role at All West/Select Sires, he will provide the entire Select Sires federation with expertise to grow large-herd beef business. Sexson is a graduate ofColorado State University and Oregon State University. Prior to joining the team at All West/Select Sires, Sexson was an animal science instructor, livestock judging team coach and beef unit manager at Oregon State University. In 2015, he was hired by All West/Select Sires and quickly established a team of independent beef representatives. Sexson has served on the Select Sires Red Angus acquisition committee and remains connected to the beef industry outside of his professional role as the marketing committee chair for the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. He resides in Stanfield, Oregon where he, his wife, Darcy, and sons, Chandler and Calvin, breed and develop Red Angus and Charolais seedstock and quarter horses.

Based in Plain City, Ohio, Select Sires Inc., is the largest global A.I. cooperative and is comprised of six farmer-owned and -controlled local organizations in the United States. As the industry leader, it provides highly fertile semen, as well as excellence in service and programs to supply dairy and beef producers with the world’s best genetics.
