NordicTrack S15i vs S22i Studio Cycles (Comparison)

Spin Bikes

YEB September 16, 2021 0

nordictrack s15i vs s22i comparison

NordicTrack is one of the biggest names in the world of indoor cycling, despite only having 2 spin bikes. These bikes are some of the best available, which is why the reputation of their bikes remains so high. Currently, the two bikes that NordicTrack has blessed the market with are the S15i Studio Cycle and the S22i Studio Cycle. Regardless of which bike one chooses to look at, there’s certainly a lot of quality to be found in both. Today we’re going to be comparing the two and seeing just how good they are.

Technical Information

The approach that NordicTrack chose to take when making these two slick indoor bikes was that of “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”. Now, this approach can backfire massively when the systems in place are inherently dysfunctional or have some other sort of issues. Fortunately, that is not the case with these two bikes. They are extremely similar to one another, with only minor differences popping up here and there, primarily in the realm of their monitors (which we will get to later).

Both the S15i and the S22i have a max user weight of 350 lbs, which is a pretty good limit. Most users will fall underneath that limit and even those who don’t will find that the limit is not a hard one. It’s not as though someone who is 360 lbs will climb aboard and the bikes would instantly crumble underneath them.

That would be silly and it does not happen. As for how the bikes generally fit different people, they do a good job of allowing for people of different sizes to fit on board. There’s no explicitly given height range, but the lengths, widths, and seat accommodations all generally line up to fit the vast majority of users.

Drivetrain and Frame

The drivetrain and other specific technical information of this section isn’t quite as detailed as some other bikes have because NordicTrack simply doesn’t have it available, even in their manuals. However, there is enough information to generally get a good picture of what the S22i and S15i are capable of. Once again, the main differences between the two bikes can be seen in the monitors rather than the physical build of the bikes. That’s why they both use unnamed Poly-V transmission belts as the drivetrain, magnetic resistance systems and 32 lb flywheels. The flywheel and magnetic resistance system combine magnificently to have an extremely quiet ride. They also both have a Q-Factor of 150 mm.

For those who are unaware, the Q-Factor is the distance between pedals. Too far of a Q-Factor and the legs bend awkwardly and can lead to discomfort while exercising. However, if the Q-Factor is too narrow, then the legs can start to bend inward and actually cause injuries. That’s why it’s important to have a nice balance, which the NordicTrack indoor bikes do well.

The pedals of the NordicTrack exercise bikes are both quality, as they allow for your feet to easily slip in with tennis shoes thanks to their integrated toe cages. They make sure that your feet stay in one place while spinning around and around, but they are also easy to slide out of once you are done with the workout. These are definitely a bonus and should be praised as such. However, they are not compatible with specific studio cycling shoes which means if you want to use these clipless shoes for extra pedal efficiency, you will need to buy a pair of dual-sided spin bike pedals.

Handlebars and Saddle

The handlebars of the S15i and the S22i are both distinctly OK. This is the one area of the spin bikes that feel like it does the job and goes no further. Don’t get us wrong, these are certainly still good pieces of equipment. However, the multi-position handlebars that come with the bikes are solid. They do the job and do it well enough, but don’t go so beyond the call of duty that they deserve separate praise. Same story with the saddle of the bike. It does the job well enough and is certainly more comfortable than the vast majority of spin bikes available on the market.

The pieces to notice about the handlebars and saddle that actually takes it level or even above other competitors are the little additions and extra components that come with the spin bikes. First of which to note is the water bottle holders. It’s common knowledge at this point that water should be consumed while working out. For those who didn’t know that, congrats! You have now discovered hydration. The fact that the bike comes with two water bottle holders makes it even better. Bring on all the hydration!

The next little addition that is nice to consider for these bikes are the 3 lb dumbbells that come with the bikes. They obviously aren’t going to get your upper body to look like Dwayne Johnson, but they are a good way for cyclists to get some upper body workouts in. Finally, they have an excellent little fan that will cool down anyone who has the luxury of working out on one of these bikes.

Monitors and Power Meters

Now we come to the real highlights of the NordicTrack spin bikes. Here’s also where the two bikes differ the most in terms of their production and build. The S22i has a monitor size of 22 inches (or 55.9 cm), while the S15i has a monitor size of 15 inches (or 38.1 cm). This makes the names of the two bikes a lot more clear and rather less fun. What remains fun is the amount of content that these monitors bring to the proverbial workout table. The 22 inch monitor on the S22i does not have any buttons around the side, instead relying solely on it’s touchscreen. The S15i relies mostly on the touchscreen, but does have a few of the physical buttons on the side in order to help some of the functions of the bike.

The fact is that the monitors are what set these bikes above the rest. Coming with a one year iFit subscription, they allow you to keep track of a whole host of different workout statistics, explore the world through various workout destination videos and train in real time with a host of different professional coaches. The iFit subscription and monitor capabilities are fantastic for anyone who is seeking to use these bikes, whether they are a beginning cyclist or an experienced veteran of the game. One of the best parts about this subscription is that if you are taking a course from one these virtual coaches, you don’t actually need to try and keep up with them in regards to changing your own incline or resistance settings. The trainers change the settings and your bike follows suit without you having to touch anything.

The monitors control an incline/decline system, allowing you to simulate going up and down different terrain. This is great to go along with some of the videos of nature that we mentioned earlier, as well as adding variety to the normal workout routines. The coaches and premade workout routines often make use of this incline capability to make those exercise sessions more intense and challenging for all. Both of these incline systems can be controlled by the patented OneTouch™ Controls that come with the NordicTrack indoor cycling bikes. This is essentially a fancy way of saying that the screen is a touchscreen rather than a monitor controlled by physical buttons. The OneTouch™ control does turn out to be rather useful if you decide to make use of the 360 degree and tilting screen. We’re not entirely sure on why you would want to rotate the screen around unless you were using the iFit membership for some non-spinning coaching sessions (which is a totally valid reason), but if you desperately want to just spin it around to see that it can, then you have that ability.

As for how one actually hears the instructions being put forth from the bikes, both the S15i and the S22i come with 2 inch speakers. They are described as being “Digitally Amplified”, but we’re pretty sure that’s just promotional speech. The speakers are most certainly well made and will offer some quality sound levels for whatever you happen to be listening to on the bike. It’s not the most important aspect of the technology on display here, but we felt it should still be praised.

The biggest downside about these quality monitors is that they do require the iFit membership to continue at their highest potential. They come with a series of preprogrammed workouts that do not require the fitness service alongside the 22 levels of magnetic resistance that are already in the machines. However, without the iFit subscription, the level of enjoyment, advancement and overall benefit of the NordicTrack spin bikes both drop. For bikes that already cost upwards of (spoiler for the next section) $1600, it seems a bit of a tall ask to have people continue paying to get the most out of these machines.

Prices and Warranties

The prices of the NordicTrack bikes are actually rather reasonable in comparison to many of the top tier spin bikes on the market today. The S15i costs a solid $1,600, while the S22i costs about $400 more. Both come with a reasonable 10 year warranty on the frame of the bike.

The warranties on the other parts of the bikes could be a bit more generous, as the parts warranty lasts for 2 years and the labour lasts for 1 year. Normally we would be rather critical of these warranties, since the warranty of a spin bike should be long enough to make sure that the user can see if something will actually break.

However, since the prices of the two bikes are lower than that of their competitors, it somewhat justifies having shorter warranties in the grand scheme of things (though if anyone from NordicTrack happens to be reading this, we still recommend bumping those warranties up a bit). For those who are unable to afford the entire cost of the bikes in one payment, NordicTrack offers payments over time as well.

Other Notable Qualities

This is the section where we discuss all the features of the NordicTrack bikes that wouldn’t fit quite so neatly in the sections listed above. As we’ve mentioned, the main difference between these two bikes comes in the form of the monitor, otherwise they are extremely similar.

Therefore, it feels more like a decision based on how much money you’re willing to spend for a 7 inch upgrade of monitor size rather than a significant upgrade in terms of bike quality. On one hand, this is great because it means that those who choose the S15i aren’t missing out on a great deal compared to the S22i. However, it also brings into question just how much the S22i is actually worth in comparison to it’s fellow NordicTrack bike.

The bikes do not come preassembled and can be somewhat difficult to actually put together. The manual is… fine. It technically tells you what to do and how to do it, but it isn’t the most straightforward manual that we’ve ever seen. Though it does do a fine job of going over every single element that has to do with the monitors and the iFit subscription.

What We Think (Conclusion)

Whichever bike you end up choosing, you really cannot lose. These are both splendid examples of what spin bikes can accomplish in the modern day, with the main difference between them coming in the form of how big their screen is. For the first year of ownership, you’ll have access to thousands of iFit workout programs, which allows you to truly integrate yourself into a regular workout routine. Once that is accomplished, Google Maps integration that comes with the bikes allows you to take a look around the globe as you ride. Whether that’s riding through the Tuscan countryside of Italy or the various streets of Amsterdam, you can take the lessons of the iFit workouts onto the streets of the world. The downside of this is that you’ll have to continue paying for an iFit subscription after the initial year’s membership is up. Although the monitors without the iFit subscription are certainly still passable.

The actual build of both bikes are fantastic. They are well made, well designed and adjustable to just about any aspiring cyclist out there. Thanks to their magnetic resistance and belt drive, you have to actively struggle in order to hear the NordicTrack bikes running. The pedals on the bike allow for anyone to keep their feet firmly in place, even during the most intense workout sessions. The handlebars and saddle are adjustable in just about any direction in order to accommodate anyone who decides to hop on and get working. The fact that it comes with a nice little fan to keep the rider cool is an even better aspect that too many other bikes seem to ignore.

Whichever bike that is picked at the end of the day, the owner has for sure got a quality bike. The only things that they’ve got to keep in mind is that the iFit subscription does eventually need to be renewed and the warranties on both bikes are not particularly good. Otherwise, these are absolutely fantastic bikes that any indoor cyclist would be proud to have.

NordicTrack Commercial S15i Studio Cycle Review

This bike really shines. At $1,599, one needs to remember that the purchase includes a one-year family membership in the iFit Coach program, valued at $396. When considering that into the equation, the consumer is looking at a very reasonably priced bike. It also comes with a pair of three-pound dumbbells, which might not be a deal-breaker, but given the variety of exercise programming afforded by the iFit community, they’ll come in handy for sure.

The bike matches up well with the MYX Fitness Bike priced at $1,299, which comes with many comparable features, although that bike brings a 21.5-inch screen to the match versus the S15i’s 14-inch. Meanwhile, the S15i does offer the NordicTrack warranty of 10 years on the frame, two for parts, and one for labor. The MYX Fitness Bike only offers a one-year warranty, and when considering value, that’s certainly a point worth mentioning.

Probably the next big question is cost of programming. The S15i is iFit-enabled and comes with one year of that app free, but after that is over the program costs about $396 per year. The bike can be used without the iFit program of course, but one of the big selling points with that program is the connectivity with live trainers who can control the bike’s resistance and speed.

Bike Build Quality

NordicTrack makes good machines and has a well-earned reputation for quality. Measuring 60 inches x 22 inches x 58 inches, the welded steel frame can support up to 350 pounds in user weight. Maximum user weight is typically a good indicator of overall bike durability, and with this model the commercial steel frame is demonstrably strong.

The bike utilizes Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) supported by an inertia-enhanced flywheel. Comparatively speaking, the MYX Fitness Bike also supports up to 350 pounds in user weight, but instead of SMR it has a whopping 41-pound flywheel. The S15i comes built with front-end transport wheels, an ergonomic padded saddle, and AutoBreeze Workout fan. A non-slip, multi-position handlebar augments the vertical and horizontal seat adjustment so riders of all heights can use it with ease.

Warranties offered are also a good indicator of overall machine quality, and while some manufacturers offer lifetime guarantees, 10 years for the frame is respectable. Other points in the bike’s favor are its enhanced corrosion resistance and large diameter adjustable leveling feet.

The Experience: Resistance and Ride

The NordicTrack Commercial S15i brings Silent Magnetic Resistance to the home. With 22 levels of digital resistance, the ride is bound to be smooth. With this type of bike, resistance is generated by way of a magnet adjusted in relation to the flywheel. The closer the magnet is moved by the digital controls, the greater the resistance. Magnetic resistance is one of the smoothest forms in that there’s little friction involved.

The 22 levels of resistance offered is key, but one of the biggest points in this model’s favor is its offering of a -10% decline as well as 20% incline. New, quiet drive incline technology makes this easier than ever. Riders looking for a real smooth burn can certainly find it climbing up and down those degrees as if on a mountain trail. This will come into play with the iFit Coach program’s compatibility with Google Maps and its ability to take one anywhere in the world virtually. The fact that the 2021 model brings Bluetooth headphone connectivity bolsters the iFit program as one can interact directly with the trainers with much more clarity.

In terms of comfort, the S15i features an ergonomic padded saddle, vertical and horizontal seat adjustment, an AutoBreeze Workout Fan, and a non-slip multi-position handlebar. These features allow riders to focus on the ride itself and not have to worry about fussing about with the bike itself. When using the iFit app, this bike brings enhanced trainer controls which allow the professional trainers leading classes to adjust resistance and incline along with the class.

NordicTrack Commercial S15i Studio Cycle Vs. The Competition

The world of indoor cycles with streaming capabilities is a crowded one indeed, but when looking at price points, it’s a littler easier to comparison shop. The MYX Fitness Bike, the Stryde Bike, and the ProForm Studio Bike Pro 22, come in as close rivals here. The biggest drawback to the S15i in this crowd frankly is the screen size. At 14 inches, it seems a little small relative to the 21.5- and 22-inch versions on these rivals. Aside from the MYX Fitness Bike and it’s 41-pound flywheel and friction resistance, the others all feature magnetic resistance. The S15i comes with a one year free membership to iFit, as does the ProForm Studio Bike Pro 22, while the Stryde Bike and MYX Fitness Bike offer their own unique paid programming packages. Where the S15i really stands out is the -10% decline and 20% incline offered, added to the fact that this works in conjunct with the iFit programming. This is pretty rare amongst bikes and for hard-core riders it could be a decision point.

The ProForm Studio Bike Pro 22’s only big drawback is the 250-pound maximum user weight capacity which, when compared to the S15i seems a bit weak. That said, it does offer 24 levels of magnetic resistance compared to the S15i’s 22. Both of these bikes offer the exact same warranty, and at $1,499 the Pro 22 does seem to offer a few more bells and whistles when compared to the S15i, hence it’s higher ratings. We still respect the higher user weight capacity of the S15i for a number of reasons aside from the rider’s own bodyweight as this is an indicator of stability.

The Stryde Bike and MYX Fitness Bike really straddle the S15i price-wise considering they don’t offer a year of free iFit valued at $396. That said, their more diverse programming options might be a big plus for someone not interested in the trainer-led workouts of iFit. Meanwhile, we have to note that the Stryde Bike offers a 5-year warranty on the frame, while the MYX Fitness Bike only offers a 1-year warranty. In terms of overall value, warranties certainly matter. When making this decision, we feel the S15i offers a good comparison/contract to the competition as it has a better warranty for the price than Stryde and MYX, a better user maximum weight than the Pro 22, but a smaller screen than any of the above. In the end, decline and incline option might be the biggest plug in its favor.

  • Use the Google Maps feature on this bike to ride anywhere around the world that you please. The large touchscreen makes this process extra enjoyable
  • Has 20% incline and -10% decline capabilities – which is a rare feature that you don’t often see
  • Provides 22 digital resistance levels to choose from, ensuring that no matter how fit you are, you can still be fully challenged by this exercise cycle

  • Comes with frame mounted transport wheels
  • Has a silent magnetic resistance feature, so you can ride in complete silence as you go about your sessions
  • The inertia enhanced flywheel provides a smooth and steady ride, giving you maximum user comfort

  • After your iFit membership is over, you will have to pay a fee to continue on which is $39 per month. This is an ongoing cost that will have to be paid for as long as you continue to use the feature
  • The bike comes with no pre-programmed options so if you don’t continue on with iFit, you will have to design your own programming
  • The one-year labor warranty is a bit short, but quite standard for the industry

Workout Programs

The NordicTrack Commerical S15i does not come with any pre-built workout programs and is designed to work with the iFit Coach program. That said, the bike will work without that app if users opt against renewing after the one-year free trial membership is complete. Like other machines within the NordicTrack family, a manual mode is available and will display key metrics. Users can always incorporate a different app of their choice and perhaps use a tablet, phone, or park the bike in front of a smart television.

Keep in mind though there’s a reason for the iFit program’s continued success. Live trainers can control the machine’s resistance as users keep up with classes that fit any interest. This is particularly key with the S15i because it offers an incline/decline function which can work with the iFit program. In addition to a growing library with thousands of routines and routes, new programs and live classes are created daily. Users can speak directly to their trainers and classmates as a live leaderboard displays results. In addition to global biking adventures by way of Google Maps, users can also engage in yoga or mindfulness sessions. This means the iFit app can also travel on another device to commercial gym, or a hotel while on vacation, and the programs aren’t limited to biking. For $396 per year after the free trial is up, users may simply choose to continue. For more information about the program, check out our review “Everything You Need to Know About iFit” here.

NordicTrack Commerical S15i Studio Cycle Features

The S15i comes equipped with a 14-inch HD touchscreen which does swivel. This is key for those exercise fans who like to throw in some floor work with the included three-pound dumbbells, practice yoga, or stretch. Wi-Fi connectivity is powered by dual 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and the bike is Bluetooth-enabled. One Touch Controls make switching among the 22 digital resistance levels easier, and there’s no question users enjoy the smooth feel of Silent Magnetic Resistance. The bike also includes a fan, dual water bottle holders, and comes with two three-pound dumbbells.

Made from commercial-grade steel, the bike sports front-mounted wheels and is easy to transport for storage. One of the more unique elements is the fact it offers both -10% decline and 20% incline, and this works in conjunct with the iFit Coach program. The bike comes with one year of the iFit program free, and while there are no built-in programs, the bike can be operated without the app if one chooses to go without.

The bike itself measures 60 inches x 22 inches x 58 inches and fits easily in most home gym spaces.

Warranty & Guarantee

This bike comes with a 10-year warranty on the frame, a two-year parts warranty, and a one-year labor warranty.

Is It Worth It?

Overall, there’s not a lot more you could ask for in a bike, making the NordicTrack Commercial S15i an excellent choice for just about everyone. It’ll be well suited to a beginner and advanced exerciser alike, so no matter where you are, you’ll love what you’re getting.

The bike offers unique features such as the incline and decline capability that you just don’t see on bike’s elsewhere that often, so that really sets it apart and will certainly attract many buyers who want this feature.

While it does have that ongoing iFit membership cost like any NordicTrack machine does after the first year, considering what you’d pay in personal training sessions for one year, we feel like this is more than affordable. When you invest in the Commercial S15i Studio Cycle, you can feel like you are making a wise purchase.

20 data points evaluated per bike

If you’re after a quality bike that offers a number of excellent features to make your ride more enjoyable, you are going to love what the NordicTrack Commercial S15i Studio Cycle has to offer.

This bike is built to last with a sturdy, durable frame and an inertia enhanced flywheel. This will help ensure that no matter what workout you have planned, you’ll get a smooth ride the full way through.

The S15i also features a 14 inch Smart HD Touchscreen, which will give you the maximum viewing experience as you watch live streamed workouts or use the Google Maps feature to take your workout around the world.

You’ll also get 20% incline and -10% decline capability on this bike, which is going to be ideal for anyone who’s looking to one-up their workouts and take them to the next level. This incline/decline option is rare among bikes, particularly since it works in conjunct with the iFit program’s remote trainers.

The 2021 model also features Bluetooth headphones and heart rate capability, meaning users can better utilize their workout apps while maintaining a check on their cardio.

It comes equipped with one-touch controls as well, which will make it easy to toggle between resistance levels or inclines, ensuring that you never lose that flow as you go about your workout session.

NordicTrack built this bike to be as silent as possible as well, so you can ride in confidence that no one around you is going to be hearing you do your workout, giving you the freedom to exercise at any point during the day.

The Great

  • 1 Year Free iFit Membership. Need the help of a personal trainer? iFit will deliver. This app gives you all that you need in a workout program and will help assist you no matter what your goals happen to be. As it is membership based, purchasing this machine gives you one year free access, after which you’ll be billed $39 per month to maintain it.
  • Add Excitement To Your Workout Session. In addition to the classes that come with iFit, another great benefit is that you’ll also get the Google Maps feature, which lets you ride anywhere you like in the world. Just pick your spot and you can watch the scenery around you on the screen.
  • Cross Training Abilities. While cardio is great for good health, you can also use this bike to help strengthen your muscles as well. Once you get off the bike, simply turn the screen and follow one of the many weight lifting sessions included with your iFit membership.
  • 14” Smart HD Touchscreen. You’ll be in heaven when you watch your streamed workouts on this large monitor screen. This comes in especially helpful when you are using Google Maps to take your workouts across the world. This screen also swivels so you can easily tilt it away from the bike if you are looking to do some cross training exercises.
  • High Level Resistance. You’ll have no shortage of challenge opportunities with this bike. It comes with 22 digital levels of resistance, which means you can quickly adjust as you go about your workout when you need extra challenge. This makes this an ideal investment for someone who is both a beginner as well as an intermediate trainee.
  • One Touch Controls. Your fingers never have to leave the handlebars. Hit the simple one touch controls and never skip a beat in your workout session.
  • Ultra Quiet Design. Worried about disturbing your family as you ride? Don’t be. This bike is incredibly quiet – so quiet you’ll hardly even know it’s running.
  • Excellent Weight Capacity. At a 350 lb. weight capacity, virtually no one is excluded from using this bike. With such a high weight capacity, you can feel confident that it’s built to last.

The Not-So-Great

  • One Year Labor Warranty. The labor warranty on this bike is relatively low at just one year. While this is fairly ‘standard’ in the industry for many pieces of exercise equipment, it’s a shame because if something should go wrong after that first year, you will be on the hook to pay labor costs.
  • iFit Ongoing Costs. While iFit is great, it does come with ongoing costs that you must not forget about. If you decide you love this feature (and many people will get hooked on it after trying it for the first free year!), you’ll need to invest $39 per month to keep going. While this is cheap in comparison to buying continuous personal training sessions, if you weren’t planning on buying personal training at all, it now becomes an added monthly bill that you will have to bare.
  • 3 lb.  Dumbbells Are Near Useless. The 3 lb. dumbbells are nearly useless and just take up extra room on this bike. While if you use them while biking, they could provide some upper body resistance, most people who are looking to gain upper body strength are far better off just doing resistance training off their cardio machine and using heavier weights that challenge themselves.

There really isn’t a single person who this bike isn’t well suited for. Because of it’s wide range of resistance levels and the high user weight capacity, pretty much everyone can benefit from what it has to offer.

Beginner, advanced, young, old, female or male, you can find yourself at home with this Studio Cycle.

The Bottom Line

The NordicTrack Commercial S15i Studio Cycle fantastic bike for delivering a top notch workout to those who put in the time. With so much variety in programming with the many resistance levels as well as the incline and decline feature, you simply can’t go wrong with it.

It’s a bike that’s built for both longevity as well as comfort, so you’ll find yourself right at home when using it.

Those who are hoping to maximize their training will also really love the added iFit feature as it’ll sure you never get bored and can continue making progress at all times.
