Tackle some real Minecrafting with the kids by making a set of Minecraft light up blocks in Emerald, Diamond, Redstone and Glowstone! I’ve got a free printable to help you out!

stack of paper minecraft blocks with lights inside

(Just a reminder, Minecraft is owned by Mojang. Download your copy here! This post is not sponsored, it’s just full of fan-o-rific love for all things blocky. The downloads in this post are just for your entertainment, so don’t you dare try to sell them to anyone. Or Herobrine will get you.)

If you’ve played Minecraft–or just watched your kid play–you know that blocks of precious stone glow in the game.

You can make your own paper versions of Minecraft blocks to play with in real life–but how can you get them to glow?? You used to be able to get stuff like this at ThinkGeek, but now that they’re closed you’ll be lucky to find one at Amazon.

We decided to make our own blocks! These are based on Minecraft ore blocks you can download for free from PixelPaperCraft.com. I made a few tweaks to the pattern so they can open and close, allowing you to put a small light inside the cube. I also moved the colored sections around so my flaps wouldn’t cover up any of the cut outs.

paper minecraft block on the inside

We lit up the blocks with battery tealights and colorful LED lights found at the dollar store. Use whatever you can find! I’m thinking glow stick bracelets might even work!

minecraft light up blocks

I ran these blocks–and all the Minecraft printables we’ve been doing–through my Silhouette. Because I’m not THAT crazy. (Seriously, have you seen all the Minecraft paper toys running around here?)

If you don’t have a digital cutter you can either cut the holes with an X-acto knife (or the Sword of Exact Zero as it’s known around here) or maybe a hole punch. I used the Silhouette to punch out the lightest color blocks in the pattern, but if you’re doing it by hand you can make bigger holes or punch out fewer sides. Mine are punched out on all six sides, but you don’t really need the top and bottom to light up…do you?

If you want to make these at home, I’m happy to share my template. I recommend printing these on card stock to make them more durable. Mitch is really fond of double sticky tape, but I’ve found that Aleene’s Tacky Glue is really awesome when it comes to paper crafting.

Mojang finally added Light Bulbs to Minecraft!

If you would like to use alternative lighting sources other than the simple torch you can look towards redstone lamps. Redstone lamps are a nicer looking alternative to the mundane torch, while it provides the same amount of light it can look nicer and give your home a modern feel that torches do not provide. They can be switched on and off with a redstone pulse.

Required materials to make a Redstone Lamp

- One block of glowstone

- Four pieces of redstone dust

- Crafting table

To make a redstone lamp for yourself you will need to travel to the nether and gather some glowstone. You can either break the glowstone with a silk touch tool to get the entire block or break it with any other tool to turn the glowstone dust into a glowstone block.

Redstone can be found deep in mines at “Y” level 15 and below. You will need at least an iron pickaxe to obtain the redstone dust from the ore.

Finally you will need the 3x3 crafting menu of a crafting table in order to make the redstone lamp.

How to Make a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft

In a Nutshell:

To make a Redstone lamp for yourself you will need to travel to the nether and gather some glowstone and make a glowstone block out of it. Then place the glowstone block in the center of the 3x3 crafting grid and surround it with 4 Redstone, 1 on each side.

Step-by-Step Guide(with Pictures):

Here is the step-by-step pictorial guide you need to follow to make a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft:

Get to the nether and search for the glowing yellow bricks found in clusters high in the nether.

Glowing yellow brick cluster in Minecraft

It is dangerous trying to gather glowstone. Take some blocks to prevent yourself from falling from high up or into lava. When you break glowstone it will drop two to four pieces of glowstone dust. If you use silk touch the entire block will drop. If you use a fortune enchanted tool, the chances of it dropping more dust is increased but it will never be more than four.

Head back to the overworld to locate some redstone ore. The ore is distinguishable by its red specks and it will glow when struck or walked over.

Redstone ore in Minecraft

Take at least an iron pickaxe to them to get the redstone dust you need. Take your components to a crafting table and make a glowstone block.

You can make a glowstone block from glowstone dust by arranging four dust into a 2x2 space.

Crafting Glowstone in Minecraft

If you had a silk touch tool you can skip this step. Next place your glowstone block in the middle surrounded by redstone dust to make your redstone lamp.

Crafting Redstone Lamp in Minecraft

That’s it! You can now utilize the redstone lamp you have to whatever you would like. I like to place the redstone lamps in my ceiling surrounded by slabs.

redstone lamps in the ceiling surrounded by slabs in Minecraft

This does not decrease the amount of light you gain from the lamp and it is a nice light fixture for any home. Just make sure it has adequate power.

How do you make a Redstone Lamp work?

A glowstone lamp requires a redstone pulse in order to turn on.

placing a redstone torch next to the glowstone lamp

You can achieve this by simply placing a redstone torch next to it. For a more sophisticated set up you can wire a lever to a redstone torch and attach some redstone dust to your lamps to make a light switch.

Lampstone working Type 2

This lever will turn the redstone torch on the other side off. The torch has dust that will reach up to the ceiling. The redstone torch will reach all four corners of the room which have redstone lamps and dust attached to the top.

Lampstone working Type 3

Flicking the lever will turn all the lights on.

Lampstone working

As for hiding the wiring you can do so by installing some stairs as a roof to hide the wiring.

Lampstone working

You may have to get creative with hiding the redstone leading up to it. I made a hallway that is a little thicker on the outside to accomplish this.

Lampstone working

Working with redstone can be awkward but it can motivate you to make extensions to rooms and add shape to blocky buildings.

FAQ

Q. How do you make a Redstone Lamp stay on?

A. You can keep a redstone lamp on by placing a redstone torch on the side of it. Alternatively, you can use levers to keep the lamps on. I prefer wiring redstone to the lamp itself and hiding the redstone with blocks.

Q. Are Redstone Lamps brighter than glowstone?

A. Both redstone lamps and glowstone emit a light level of 15 which is similar to torches. The difference is solely in appearance as well as the control offered by the redstone lamp. Making an entire room dark is a little counterintuitive but lighting up most of a room and complementing it with a redstone lamp that can be switched on and off can help tie a room together.

  • 8

Mine cobblestone. Use the pickaxe you just crafted to mine cobblestone. Cobblestone is mined from stone blocks using a wooden pickaxe or greater. Place the pickaxe in your hot bar and select it. Then use the attack button to mine cobblestone.[2]

  • 9

Craft a furnace. You need 8 cobblestone blocks to craft a furnace. To craft a furnace, select the crafting table and place 8 cobblestone blocks in the outer spaces of the 3x3 grid.[3]

  • 10

Place the furnace. After crafting a furnace, put it in your hot bar and place it somewhere in the game world where you can easily find it.

  • 11

  • 16

Mine at least 3 diamond ore. Diamond ore is fairly rare, but it can be found deep underground in caves. It resembles stone blocks with light-blue spots on them. To mine diamond ore, place an iron pickaxe in your hot bar, and select it. Then use it to attack the diamond ore blocks.

  • 17

Smelt the diamond ore. After you have mined at least 3 diamond ore, place it in the furnace along with some fuel to smelt the diamond ore. After the diamond ore is done smelting, drag the diamond into your inventory.

  • 18

  • 19

Mine obsidian. You need at least 10 to 14 obsidian blocks to build an obsidian portal. Obsidian is found where flowing water comes in contact with lava. It can often be found deep in caves. You need a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian.

  • 20

Build a nether portal frame. Use obsidian to build a nether portal frame. The frame should be a minimum of 4x5, and a maximum of 23x23. The frame needs to be surrounded by obsidian on all sides (corners are optional) with space in the middle to walk through.[4]

  • 21

Ignite the nether portal and walk through it. After constructing the nether portal frame, use the flint and steel to light a fire in the center of the nether portal frame. This activates the nether portal. When a purple energy field appears in the center of the nether portal, walk through it to travel to the nether.

  • 22

Mine glowstone dust.Glowstone dust can be mined from glowstone in the nether. Glowstones are the bright, glowing blocks that hang from the ceiling. You don't need any special tools to mine glowstone dust. Just attack a glowstone block until it breaks open and drops 2 to 4 glowstone dust. Walk over the glowstone dust to collect it.
    • You can also get glowstone dust from bartering with certain cleric villagers, or by defeating a witch. However, the nether is the most consistent method of getting glowstone dust.
  • 23

Craft glowstone. After you have mined glowstone, select a crafting table and select glowstone from the menu, or place 4 glowstone dust in the 3x3 grid and drag the glowstone block into your inventory.

  • 24

Place glowstone. Once crafted, glowstone can be placed anywhere just like any other block. Glowstone blocks are slightly brighter than torches. They glow indefinitely, and can be crafted into redstone lamps.

    Lighting preview.png

Light (or lighting) in Minecraft affects visibility, mob spawning, and plant growth. There are three aspects of Minecraft's lighting system: light level, internal light level, and rendered brightness.

    Light level[]

Light levels can be found on the debug screen in Java Edition. Light may come from two sources: the sky and certain blocks. There are 16 light levels, specified by an integer from 0 (the minimum) through 15 (the maximum).

    neutral mobs from spawning.‌[untilJE 1.18]See § Mobs

Block light comes from light-emitting blocks, and spreads using a flood fill algorithm.

The block light level decreases by one for each meter (block) of taxicab distance from the light source. This applies to each of the 3 coordinate axes. In other words, the light level decreases diagonally by the sum of the distances along each axis. For example:

    • If a torch with light level 14 is placed on the floor, the light level of the adjacent floor blocks in all four directions is 13, while the diagonal blocks in all four directions have a light level of 12 (14 minus 1 south, minus 1 east).
    • If a torch with light level 14 is placed on a wall one block above the floor, then the block on the floor that is one block southeast of and below the torch has a light level of 11 (14 minus 1 south, minus 1 east, minus 1 down).

In Bedrock Edition, light-filtering blocks can reduce more than 1 level of block light.

On a surface, this effect produces a diamond-shaped pattern of illumination around the light source.

In Java Edition, when calculating lighting, the shapes of some blocks are detected: piston, daylight detectors, enchanting table, farmland, lectern, stonecutter, grass path, snow, end portal frame, slabs and stairs, so that the light passing through them can spread only in specific directions. For example, the grass path prevents the light from propagating downward, but the light can propagate in other directions.

    Sky light[]

The sky light level for blocks exposed to broad daylight is 15. Sky light cast onto blocks can spread to darker areas using a flood fill algorithm. Sky light is not reduced at night; rather, the spawning of mobs is determined by internal light values.

Opaque blocks can prevent the spread of sky light. By contrast, transparent blocks such as glass and iron bars have no effect on the sky light level. All light-filtering blocks, however, reduce the spread of sky light.

When sky light of a level of 15 spreads down through a transparent block, the level remains unchanged. When it spreads horizontally or upward, it reduces 1 light level. However, when it spreads through a light-filtering block, it does not follow the above two rules and attenuates specific light levels.

Sky light with a level less than 15 spreads as block light - when it propagates to adjacent (including top and bottom, six blocks in total) blocks, it is attenuated until it is 0.

In Java Edition, when calculating lighting, the shapes of some blocks are detected: piston, daylight detectors, enchanting table, farmland, lectern, stonecutter, grass path, snow, end portal frame, slabs, and stairs. They have directional opacity, so that the light passing through them can spread only in specific directions. For example, the grass path prevents the light from propagating downward, but the light can propagate in other directions.

    Light-filtering blocks[]

In Java Edition, all of the following light-filtering blocks decrease sky light by 1 level (but do not affect block light).

In Bedrock Edition, light-filtering blocks can reduce more levels of block or sky light. The following values are the amounts by which each block decreases the light level.

    Internal light level[]

The internal light level is used for calculations within the game. The game uses the internal light level of one block to compute aspects of the game, which include mob spawning, plant growth, and daylight detector outputs.

The game uses sky light, time, and weather to calculate an internal sky light value (also known as darkening sky light), then uses the maximum level of the block light and the internal sky light to calculate the internal light (formula: ). This value is an integer with a maximum level of 15; it can also be negative.

Here are the levels of internal sky light at a sky light of level 15:
