The Samsung Chromebook 3 is part of the Computers test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Chromebooks models like the Chromebook 3 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Ergonomics Represents the quality of the keyboard and pointing device, and accessibility of features.

Portability Portability is based on the size and weight of the unit, as well as battery life.

Display Covers display size, clarity, color, brightness, and glare.

High Performance For Basic Tasks

The model we’re reviewing here is the newer $ version with a larger 64GB of storage space. The previous version — which is often out of stock — is available for well under $ but only has 16GB of storage capacity.

With either version you’re paying a pretty low price tag for a netbook, but you’ll get surprisingly high performance in return. 4GB of RAM and a Celeron processor is really all you need to smoothly run the stripped-down Chrome OS.

High Performance Samsung Chromebook 3

Granted, you may notice some lag if you have dozens of tabs open simultaneously. Most users can expect overall speedy performance while surfing the web, sending emails, or checking out apps.

It’s important to note the Chromebook 3 isn’t meant to be a gaming device by any stretch of the imagination. While it can smoothly run some basic Google Play apps, any sort of graphics-intensive options like MMOs, shooters, or strategy games are going to run poorly.

This particular device is more aimed at playing time wasting games like connect-3 titles, Angry Birds, or the occasional gacha creature collector or 2D RPG.

Hitting The Right Price Point

How exactly is Samsung offering a 4GB system for such a low price? There are a few major trade-offs made to be aware of, as they could make or break your buying decision.

First and most importantly — there’s no touch screen capability with the display here. For web browsing and emailing that won’t matter at all, but it does reduce the usefulness of some Android apps.

.. you’ll still get decent visuals when streaming YouTube videos or Netflix shows..

Besides the standard screen setup lacking a touch option, this model has a much, much lower resolution display than the x that is becoming more standard on laptops these days.

To be fair, at this screen size it doesn’t make much of a difference though. You don’t really need a super high resolution on an 11 inch Chromebook screen, as that would mostly just serve to make smaller text harder to read.

For a basic web browsing device, a x resolution screen isn’t a deal breaker like it would be with a gaming laptop. Even at that lower resolution, you’ll still get decent visuals when streaming YouTube videos or Netflix shows on the 11 inch display.

Despite the low resolution, Samsung managed to offer a significantly brighter display here than you’ll find with many other similar priced units, and non-black colors in particular really pop.

There is one odd downside for a smaller Chromebook, however. The screen bezels are surprisingly thick for a device of this size, which further reduces an already small viewing area.

Body Style And Keyboard Design

Obviously you aren’t going to find an all-metal chassis at this price point. Instead you get the standard plastic body, but it is noticeably constructed to have a metallic look and feel.

Samsung can usually be counted on for solid build quality of their mobile devices like tablets, and the Chromebook 3 is no exception despite the low cost.

keyboad SSC3

This particular model doesn’t quite hit the slim build style of the more high end ultrabooks, but it’s still less than an inch thick when closed, making it smaller than the average laptop.

That’s a huge plus for portability, but it also means you’ve got to deal with some changes to the keyboard layout. The incredibly compacted keyboard on an 11 inch machine takes some serious getting used to if you’ve been exclusively using full size laptops in the past.

Anyone can eventually overcome that hurdle just by typing up emails daily, but this model’s keyboard design has one major flaw that has become the bane of many new Chromebook users — the power button is positioned directly above the backspace key.

Why does that matter?

Just take a moment and think about how many times a day you reach your pinky over to hit backspace to delete some text on Facebook or Twitter. Now think about how many times you’ve ever overshot and hit the wrong section of the keyboard next to the backspace key.

Every time you do that, your Chromebook is going to power off.

I fully understand that concessions must be made in design to make a device this small and portable, but that’s still simply a terrible place to position the power button.

Finally, it’s a minor gripe, but there’s no indicator light on the power button, which most users will be used to seeing with a laptop.

I’m not sure if that was to save space or increase battery life, but either way it feels like there couldn’t have been that much of a difference with a small light placed inside the button.

Other Features

When dealing with an ultraportable device, typically you’d expect to lose quite a few features. Obviously there’s no room for a DVD drive, but with a Chromebook you simply don’t need one anyway.

It Isn’t lacking in other connectivity options and ports however, with two USB ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI port, and an audio jack for headphones.

Speaking of headphones, you will absolutely want to invest in those, because the built-in speakers are fairly low quality. That’s another concession you just have to deal with due to the very low cost.

..incredibly impressive for a mobile device, you can run this Chromebook 3 all day long without needing to find an power outlet ..

Not only are the speakers of rather sub-par quality in general, but they also face downwards and are positioned on the bottom of the chassis. That means you’ll get muted sound whether you set the device on a table or place it on your lap.

Where the Chromebook fails on the audio side, it absolutely excels in terms of battery life, and that’s probably the single biggest draw to this budget model.

Samsung has the Chromebook 3 rated for up to 11 hours, but most users are likely to see more in the 9 to 10 range. That’s still incredibly impressive for a mobile device though, since you can run this Chromebook all day long without needing to find an power outlet.

Whether you use it at home, the office, or school, you can rely on this model to keep going no matter how long you are web browsing or using Android apps.

Of course, you also get a standard p webcam positioned above the screen. The cam’s quality isn’t going to win any awards, but it gets the job done if you want to Skype your friends and family on a regular basis.

Samsung Chromebook 3 Review

We purchased the Samsung Chromebook 3 so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you’re a dedicated Google user and you’d like a lightweight laptop rather than a tablet, the Samsung Chromebook 3 could be a great complement to your connected lifestyle. It doesn’t take up much room or overcomplicate the experience with too many extras. You just need a Google account and you’re good to enjoy the full suite of Google services and other media via USB, HDMI, and microSD. I used this laptop for a week of general media playback and browsing and enjoyed the straightforward, minimalist experience and impressive battery life.

For more laptops under $, check out this list for affordable options.

Design: Small, sleek, and ready to move

The Samsung Chromebook 3 is a champ when it comes to portability. At just pounds with a relatively slim build, it adds a little but not too much bulk. I still definitely noticed it when I stowed it in a tote bag or backpack, but it’s nothing compared to a laptop that’s over 3 pounds, which is a considerable amount of heft for daily commuting or travel.

At just pounds, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is a champ when it comes to portability.

The screen hinge is quite sticky, but that’s preferable to feeling like it’s going to fall off—especially since the screen has the ability to recline completely back to reach a nearly degree stance. The keyboard takes up much of the body of the laptop. The keys are large, raised, and curved, which is supposed to make the experience more comfortable. It did offer some ergonomic comfort in contrast to the touchpad area, but it’s a bit too small. Because it’s oriented so close to the edge of the device, I felt wrist strain even after just a few minutes of use. Touchpads aren’t known to be especially cozy for long-term operation, but I experienced more of an unnatural bend in my wrist than I’ve noticed with other laptop touchpads.

There’s a decent number of ports on this small device. It was easy to extend the display using an HDMI cord and connect an external drive via one of the USB ports. There’s a microSD port as well for accessing media, but there’s no Type-C port.

Touchpads aren’t known to be especially cozy for long-term operation, but I experienced more of an unnatural bend in my wrist than I’ve noticed with other laptop touchpads.

Display: Clear and relatively crisp

The Chromebook 3’s inch display is decent, though not out of this world. It features Intel HD Graphics and anti-reflective properties—both of which were richer and more effective than what I noticed from the Lenovo Ideapad S’s display. Content is somewhat visible and legible even from an extreme angle to the side of the screen. I didn’t notice as much of the sort of shadowy effect that can sometimes take hold when not looking at an LCD straight on.

As for appearance in bright light, it held up pretty well, with little glare or washed-out appearance. The screen resolution, especially when streaming Netflix content or other media, was best when the brightness was turned up to percent. Most content tended to look more cool than vibrant, but this small screen offered more contrast and vibrancy than I expected.

Performance: Competent but not at the head of the class

I used CrXPRT, a benchmarking tool from Principled Technologies for Chromebooks, to gauge general performance with tasks like streaming video, playing movies, and even editing photos. I ran the Performance Test which yielded an overall result of

Compared to other Samsung Chromebooks, the score wasn’t the lowest. The Samsung Chromebook XEC12 takes that spot with a score of 32, and the highest performer is the Chromebook Pro CK01, at points. (The better-performing Chromebooks scored by CrXPRT earned marks closer to ).

I also ran the WebXPRT 3 test to capture how well this device performs basic web-based tasks. The score of 46 placed it above competing models like the HP Stream, which scored a 29 overall, but below the Dell Inspiron 11 , which scored a By contrast, some of the highest performing laptops score near or over The inch MacBook Pro was near the top of the table with a overall score.

Productivity: An efficient multitasker

This small machine is very capable of performing multiple tasks at once. I could operate several browser tabs, stream both YouTube and Netflix content, and play a simple game like Pac-Man and Pocket World 3D without noticing any lags or interruptions.

It was efficient for working within the Google suite of tools like Google Docs and Gmail and web surfing as well. All of these basic functions are what a customer buying a device like this is looking for, and the Chromebook 3 delivers for daily computing and multimedia use.

As for anything more demanding like more intensive gaming, this little laptop falls short. I tried to play Asphalt 8 with little success. There were lengthy load times and lagging, and it froze up easily.

I could open several browser tabs, stream content, and play a simple game without any interruptions.

Audio: Plenty of volume and some dynamics

Audio quality isn’t terrible on the Samsung Chromebook 3. Videos and music reached high volumes and were quite clear, but the higher the volumes, the tinnier the sound became with a kind of echoey effect with dialogue.

Overall volume was louder with headphones than without them, and a little clearer too. But considering that the stereo speakers are located on the bottom of the device, I’d say the sound is not nearly as muffled as I’d expected it to be. For games, too, this sort of echoey and muffled sound quality came through, but it seemed better than when playing video content.

Network: Consistent and reasonable

The Samsung Chromebook 3 is a Bluetooth and ac dual-band capable device. While Ookla Speed Test results (in the Chicago area) showed average download speeds of 58Mbps on my Xfinity ISP of up to Mbps. That said, I noticed slight lag from the performance I see with a MacBook which averages between Mbps with my tri-band ac router.

Camera:Unimpressive, but functional

Most laptop shoppers aren’t looking for a top-notch built-in camera, but the Chromebook 3’s camera is lackluster at best. It functioned adequately for video chat usage and did not lag when capturing video, but picture and video quality was blurry. Bright light, especially natural light, improved the ability to capture a clearer picture or video, but generally, everything was a bit hazy, fuzzy, and washed out.

Battery: Long-lasting and quick to charge

Samsung says the Chromebook 3’s battery can last for up to 11 hours. With consistent use of heavy-duty tasks like video streaming, I noticed the battery lasted closer to hours. Without asking the laptop to perform streaming-heavy activity, it was much closer 11 hours and maybe a little more when combining stints of active use and then periods of non-use. Even better, this laptop consistently charged back to full in about two hours.

Software: Chrome OS enhanced by Google Play

If you regularly use or want to use certain features or programs that are only specific to Windows or macOS and not offered by Chrome OS, then a Chromebook like this one could feel more restrictive and less of a valuable investment. But the Chrome OS isn’t necessarily a constraint if you’re dialed in to Android and Google. If that’s you, you’ll probably find the kinds of extensions and apps you want in the Chrome and Google Play stores.

You do need a Google account to get the most from this device, though using guest mode does grant access to general Chrome web browsing—which eliminates all traces of browsing history once signed out. That includes any bookmarks or file downloads.

If you don’t demand too much heavy lifting from your laptop, this budget-conscious notebook is easy to throw in your bag for web browsing and computing essentials.

Price: Affordable and competitive

Price is a hurdle that the Samsung Chromebook 3 clears quite well. Lightweight and affordable laptops for around $ are sort of a rare find. Chromebooks from other brands like Asus can creep well above $ and maybe even exceed $ for premium options. If you’re aiming for an inexpensive but efficient Chromebook that offers solid performance, the Chromebook 3 sits right in that unique sweet spot to save you some cash and still get what you want from a laptop.

Samsung Chromebook 3 vs. Acer Chromebook 15

The Acer Chromebook 15 (see on Amazon) has a list price of just $29 more than the Chromebook 3, but boasts the larger display at inches. The Acer’s screen is designed with the same graphics controller model and screen resolution, but it features a wide-angle display for better visibility from different angles when viewing content and for webcam use. Another benefit when viewing content is the top-facing stereo speakers on the Acer Chromebook 15, which eliminates muffling.

The trade-off for the larger display comes with an overall larger body and significantly heavier weight of pounds. The Acer Chromebook also functions on the same processor but has less memory at just 2GB. As for compatibility and convenience, the Acer Chromebook matches the Samsung Chromebook on ports, but its battery is supposed to last up to 12 hours, which is 1 hour longer than the Samsung Chromebook. Both offer decent portability and the same kind of performance for daily, easy computing tasks and web browsing. But if you’re looking for a large display and slicker metal build, the Acer Chromebook 15 pulls slightly ahead in those areas.

Final Verdict

A lightweight, budget-friendly Chromebook for the basics.

The Samsung Chromebook 3 combines an affordable price and lightweight form factor with enough performance and efficiency for reliable daily use. If you don’t demand too much heavy lifting from your laptop, this budget-conscious notebook is easy to throw in your bag for web browsing and computing essentials.

Update: We've added results from our Chromebook drop test (see durability and drop test section) in which the Samsung Chromebook 3 fared surprisingly well.

The $ Samsung Chromebook 3 is a great little laptop for both school and entertainment, especially for younger kids and frequent travelers. This inch notebook not only boasts a fantastic screen and nearly 10 hours of battery life but also comes with 4GB of RAM, so you can expect solid performance. And because its 32GB of storage isn't taken up by Windows 10, you'll find plenty of onboard storage for your personal files. For the price, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is one of the best Chromebooks, best laptops under $ and best laptops under $ around.

There are three variations of the updated Samsung Chromebook 3. Our $ review unit comes with a GHz Intel Celeron N processor, Intel HD Graphics , 4GB of RAM and 32GB eMMc flash storage, and it's available at and

The two other configurations use the same Celeron processor and Intel graphics, but differ on RAM and storage capacity. There is a 16GB version of the Chromebook 3 for $, and a $ version with only 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage.

If you're interested in a higher end alternative of the Samsung Chromebook 3, consider getting the Samsung Chromebook Plus LTE. For $, you'll get a stylish 2-in-1 laptop with an Intel Celeron Y processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB eMMC, a inch, x panel and 4G LTE. It also includes a built-in stylus capable of capturing 4, levels of pressure sensitivity with tilt recognition. On top of that, it features a 13MP world-facing camera with autofocus built into the keyboard.

Samsung Chromebook 3 design

For a sub-$ device, the Chromebook 3's build quality is surprisingly good, even though it's made of plastic. The textured "metallic black" looks classy enough for any setting. The chassis has a silky-smooth palm rest, as well as a gently rounded lip to keep your wrists comfortable. The subtle texture around the display helps minimize reflections from the glossy bezel.

The hinge is strong and flexible, with the ability to tilt the screen to degrees. There is no flexing around its keyboard, which is a problem that plagues most other laptops in this price range. The Samsung notebook is small enough to tuck under your arm, and hardy enough to slip into your luggage for international travel.

Measuring x 8 x inches and weighing pounds, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is practically the HP Stream 11's twin ( x x inches, pounds) but with a different operating system. The two inch laptops in the group -- the Lenovo Ideapad S ( x x inches, pounds) and the Dell Inspiron 14 ( x x inches, pounds) -- are much bigger and heavier than their inch rivals.

Samsung Chromebook 3 ports

The Chromebook 3 has the ports you need.

On the left side, there is a battery indicator, a slim jack for the AC adapter, a USB port, a full-size HDMI port and a microSD card slot. On the opposite side, you'll find a USB port, as well as a combination audio and microphone jack.

Samsung Chromebook 3 durability and drop test

The Chromebook 3 did an excellent job in our Chromebook drop test, which involved dropping 11 of the most popular Chromebooks from feet and feet onto concrete and carpet. Samsung's laptop, although not technically ruggedized, didn't show any signs of wear after our first few drops. Only on the side drop from feet did the Chromebook 3's bezel separate from the screen, but we were able to snap everything back into place and return the Chromebook 3 to near-new condition.

Samsung Chromebook 3 display

The real star of the Samsung Chromebook 3 is its exceptional screen. The Chromebook 3's x LED display is brighter than its competitors', at nits. That is more luminous than the nits from both the Lenovo Ideapad S and the HP Stream 11, as well as the nit display on the Dell Inspiron 14 Viewing angles are decent on the Chromebook 3, as you can clearly see all the colors on the screen from about 45 degrees on each side.

The colors on the Chromebook 3 are so realistic that they put other budget laptops to shame. Whereas most other panels in this class make everything skew blue and cool, the Samsung laptop delivered warmer tones that look more authentic and detailed.

In the Dunkirk trailer, only the Chromebook 3's panel showed the subtle hint of yellow sand and brackish green water in its opening sequence. I also appreciated the finer details of Vulture's metallic armor in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, which was an improvement over the Stream 11's display.

The Chromebook 3's accurate hues are partly due to its near-perfect Delta-E rating (closer to 0 is best). Its competitors' ratings, by comparison, miss the mark completely and all fall within the same range: for the Stream 11, for the Inspiron 14 and for the Ideapad S

The Chromebook 3's x LED display is brighter than its competitors' screens, at nits.

On the flip side, the Samsung laptop has the most limited color range of the bunch, reproducing only percent of the sRGB gamut. The inch HP display reproduced percent of the gamut, the inch Dell panel delivered percent and the Lenovo's screen had the widest color range, at percent.

Samsung Chromebook 3 audio

The bottom-firing speakers on the Samsung Chromebook 3 are decent for the price. At least they are loud enough to fill a small room with sound, but they don't have the versatility and finesse of the Stream 11's DTS Studio Sound-enhanced speakers.

However, HP's system edged out the Samsung laptop on the jazzy "Summer Montage" from the La La Land soundtrack. The Chromebook 3's speakers distorted the trumpets whenever they reached the high notes, and the cymbals sounded more muddy than on the Stream

Samsung Chromebook 3 keyboard and touchpad

Typing on the Samsung Chromebook 3's spill-resistant keyboard feels comfortable, as its keys are ever-so-slightly curved to fit your fingertips and keep your fingers oriented. The keys are well sized and take full advantage of the width of the device, which is good news for people with bigger fingers.

Because the Backspace key is just below the power key, you're just an accidental keystroke away from accidentally shutting down the machine.

Both the Chromebook 3 and the Stream 11 have millimeters of key travel (between and 2 mm is ideal), but it takes 63 grams of force to actuate a key on the Chromebook 3, versus 69 grams on the Stream 11 (60 grams is the minimum we prefer). When I took the typing test, I scored 76 words per minute with a 9 percent error rate. That is just a touch slower and less accurate than my normal 80 wpm and 7 percent error rate on my Microsoft Surface Pro 4's Type Cover.

My biggest gripe with the Chromebook 3's keyboard is its layout. I wish there were more distance between the power button and the rest of the keyboard. Because the Backspace key is just below the power key, you're just an accidental keystroke from accidentally shutting down the machine. I also wish the power key had an indicator light to let me know how long to press the button to turn on the device.

At x inches, the Chromebook 3's touchpad is generous for an inch device. The material of the touchpad feels cool and smooth, like its palm rest. It's also highly sensitive, so we suggest lightly tapping the surface to navigate the device.

Samsung Chromebook 3 performance

With a GHz Intel Celeron N processor, Intel HD Graphics , 4GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMc flash storage, the Chromebook 3 has the performance you need for handling web surfing and word processing. I had 10 web browser tabs open while I did everything from edit a couple of Google Docs to stream a concert from YouTube, and nothing fazed the device. I even watched a couple of p movie trailers while all those other tabs were running in the background, and the Chromebook 3 still showed no serious lag, other than a second to reload a web page.

The Chromebook 3 earned a score of in the JetStream JavaScript benchmark, which beats rivals such as the Stream 11 (GHz Intel Celeron N, ) and the Inspiron 14 (GHz Intel Celeron N, ). However, the Chromebook 3 is still no match for the faster Ideapad S (GHz Intel Celeron N, ).

In the WebGL Aquarium graphics test, the Samsung laptop thoroughly trounced its competitors by rendering 2, fish in the tank at 23 frames per second. All of its similarly outfitted opponents did much worse: The Lenovo Ideapad S wavered between 6 and 7 fps, while the Stream 11 notched 12 fps. The Inspiron 14 came the closest, at 17 fps.

With its integrated Intel HD Graphics , the Chromebook 3 can handle some casual web-based and app games, such as Cut the Rope, but the 3D first-person shooter Web Quake slowed to a crawl in the middle of gameplay.

Samsung Chromebook 3 battery life

The Samsung Chromebook 3 can easily last a full workday on a charge. It clocked 9 hours and 44 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi). The Dell Inspiron 14 was a close second with , and the HP Stream 11 posted a respectable The Lenovo Ideapad S flamed out with a time of

Samsung Chromebook 3 storage

Because the Samsung Chromebook 3 uses Chrome OS, there is ample free space on its 32GB eMMc flash memory for your files. Unlike Windows based systems with the same storage capacity, the Chromebook 3 offers over 20GB of free space right out of the box, versus the measly GB available on the Lenovo Ideapad S

While this free space means you'll have ample room for the latest OS updates and Chrome apps, you should still invest in a microSD card or use a cloud storage service such as Google Drive to store your photo or music collection.

Samsung Chromebook 3 webcam

Of all four sub-$ laptops I tested, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is the only one with an HD webcam that offers live filters such as Vintage and Big Eyes to enhance video chats, and Multi-Shot mode for the camera. My test selfie with the p camera looked slightly noisy, but I could clearly see details like the blue flowers on my shirt and the folds in my black couch. The blue piping around my collar also looked accurate.

Samsung Chromebook 3 heat

The underside of the Samsung Chromebook 3 gets a bit warm. After we streamed a HD video for 15 minutes, its underside reached a troubling degrees Fahrenheit, which is a much higher temperature than our degree comfort threshold. However, it never felt hot in my lap thanks to the insulating plastic chassis. The touchpad and keyboard were much cooler, at 81 and 91 degrees, respectively.

Samsung Chromebook 3 software and warranty

Besides the standard Google apps, like Google Docs and YouTube, the Samsung Chromebook 3 doesn't have any preloaded software. You can download other apps, such as games and browser extensions, through the Chrome Web Store. According to Google, you'll be able to download some Android apps to the Samsung Chromebook 3 in the near future, but the Google Play store is currently in beta for this particular model.

If you purchase this Samsung laptop, you would be entitled to an additional GB of free cloud storage on Google Drive for two years. But you'll have to claim this offer from Google's Chromebook Offers web page, as it's not preloaded onto the device.

Samsung provides a one-year warranty on parts and labor. If you want more extended protection, you have to purchase additional service through retailers such as Best Buy.

Bottom line

Everyone likes getting more for less. With the $ Samsung Chromebook 3, you get the brightest inch display in this class, speedy performance with 4GB of RAM, just about 10 hours of battery life and a fun webcam -- all for less money than the Windows-powered $ HP Stream 11 costs. There are a few downsides, though including weak speakers and awkward key placement. You also have to be willing to live with the limitations of Chrome OS.

If your life and work are heavily tied to the Windows and Microsoft Office environment, then the $ HP Stream 11 or $ Lenovo Ideapad S might make more sense. If you value a big and bright screen but you don't care too much about battery life, then the Lenovo Ideapad S is a good choice. And if you want the best listening experience and at least 8 hours of battery life, then go with the HP Stream

But if you're willing to give Chrome OS a try, this compact Samsung laptop is a solid choice for students and anyone who primarily uses their laptop to surf the web.

Model: While the Chromebooks may seem pointless to most, they can be a great tool for staying constantly connected without shelling out for too much to others. Such is the case with the Samsung Chromebook 3. For a cheap device, its quality is surprisingly good; barring its specs, which isn’t the point of this device although it should be worth a mention. This device is powered by an Intel Celeron N, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of flash storage; no SSDs here but close enough. Looking at its construction and materials the Samsung Chromebook 3 is mainly made out of plastic, although it has some textured metallic black accents, which is considerably pleasant to the eye. Despite its chassis material the Samsung Chromebook 3 is quite rigid and strong enough for normal use without breaking easily. For its size, the IO is surprisingly well. It comes with two USB ports, a full sized HDMI port, an audio jack and an SD card reader, although it should be noted that the USB ports are both a and variant, respectively. The Samsung Chromebook 3 is quite light at only kg although it loses out to its rivals. However, this shouldn’t be an issue as long it doesn’t exceed the kg mark for devices of its size. Despite its size the real tour de force of the Samsung Chromebook 3 is its excellent display. It is very much brighter than its competitor's. At nits, it outright beats the Lenovo Ideapad S. However, it should be noted that it only has an HD resolution of 1, x pixels,  but at its size having a higher resolution doesn’t make sense. Because of its excellent color reproduction this tiny Chromebook puts its other competitors to shame for its given price bracket. One thing to note here is color reproduction is not the same as color accuracy. The display was only able to score an sRGB rating of 63 %, while its competitor, the Lenovo Ideapad S, achieved 83 %.

In the audio department, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is about decent for its price bracket, but isn’t great. Nevertheless, it is still able to fill a room with sound. Don’t expect the Samsung Chromebook 3 to punch beyond its price bracket, since it does rather poorly when it comes to highs, which causes the sound to be distorted. Next in the firing line is the keyboard and touchpad. While the keyboard is reasonably sized and spaced apart for users with large fingers, it does have a bit of flaws in respect to its backspace and power button. If you are a touch typist you'd better make damned sure that you are occasionally glancing as you’re just a backspace away from accidentally shutting down the device. This might take some time getting used to. Overall the typing experience remains quite comfortable with some kinks. As for the touchpad it is quite large for an inch device, which is great. The touchpad feels smooth enough to glide about without any noticeable resistance although, like its palm rest, it is very sensitive. However, users shouldn’t be choosy since sensitivity is also a good thing. Lastly as a Chromebook battery life should be mentioned. The Samsung Chromebook 3 was able to clock in at 9 hours and 44 minutes in the Wi-Fi test, which is respectable. If you are the kind of person who likes to get more for less you can’t really go wrong with the Samsung Chromebook 3.
