No Indoor Fan, Fan Not Running, Fan Not Blowing, No Airflow:

However you want to word it, if your indoor fan isn't working it could be several things. We will go over a few things to check before calling for service.

First make sure there is power to the indoor unit and that a switch or breaker isn't off. Some indoor units (Heat Pumps) have breakers right on the Air Handler itself. But also check the main breaker panel. Some units have a shutoff switch on the side of the unit or an Emergency Switch located on a wall.

Then make sure your air filter isn't blocked. Sometimes that is the only problem. Some customers don't even know they have an air filter and it has never been checked. Try setting the thermostat fan switch to the "on" position. Feel for air coming out of the vents.

If it is in the air conditioning mode, check for ice around the evaporator coil and on the refrigerant lines at the indoor unit. If the coil froze, the fan could be working but the air wont go through the ice until it melts. If the fan isn't working, that can cause the coil to freeze. If the coil is frozen, shut off the air conditioning immediately. Then check-out our page - heat pump iced-up in summer. (Even if it's not a heat pump.)

Some equipment still use belt driven motors. Mostly "low-boy" oil furnaces, especially older models. Sometimes the belts wear out, crack, and eventually break. If you take a look at the blower section of your heating system it is quite easy to see if you have a belt driven blower motor. You will see a motor sitting on top or next to a larger blower wheel connected by a fan belt.

The blower wheel (attached to the fan motor) may also be clogged with dirt or debri, as shown below. Sometimes, even a dead animal; such as a squirrel have been found stuck in a blower wheel! Never attempt to work on the motor or blower wheel unless the power has been turned off to the unit.

Most fans are energized by a fan relay. This is probably the most common cause. The contacts inside the relay go bad. They usually stick open, never sending the signal to the motor. This is much easier and less expensive to repair than a motor going bad.

A weak, faulty, or shorted capacitor can prevent the motor from running. And of course, the motor itself can always go bad. Sometimes the bearings seize. Or the motor just burns up or weakens.

Below is a list of possible causes. Items in red usually require a service call. The bottom four causes in blue are commonly found problems and can be addressed, even fixed by the homeowner.

Red = Professional fix | Blue = Homeowner fix

  • Faulty relay or fan control
  • Faulty motor
  • Faulty fan belt
  • Bad wiring
  • Faulty thermostat
  • Frozen coil due to an air conditioning problem
  • Bad or weak motor capacitor
  • Breaker or switch off
  • Filter completely blocked
  • Blower wheel clogged with debri

    Lennox Air Handler CBA38MV

The unit is very quiet and the fan ramps up and down on start and stop. This feature makes the unit very quiet. It is also very efficient, running far less than our old unit. It was installed (including removal of the old unit) in about 5 hrs. I highly recommend it.

Thank You Lennox and Aire Serv

We believe the Lexxox unit that was installed works half as hard as the old unit. Our home maintains the temperature without running all day and night. Our electricity bill did go down which is really appreciated. The crew with Aire-Serv in Atoka TN that installed the unit are exceptional people. Thank You Lennox and Aire Serv.

    Cooling effeciency

It cools very well and is very energy efficient. My electric bills have seen a big decrease since the unit was installed.

    Great Air Handler

This is the second Lennox HVAC unit that we have purchased. The first one was for our home in Michigan. This one was for our Florida home. The original unit was 18 years old and kept breaking down. I had researched most brand names and compared them with respect to efficiency, durability and service record. Lennox tops all other brands. This air handler is very efficient and is also very quiet. It came with a smart wifi Ecobee thermostat. I love the Ecobee, it is really clever and has ... read more tons of features that you can use to control the A/C. It came with a remote sensor that I have placed in the bedroom for more comfort. The only reason I gave this unit a 4 star instead of 5 is the price. This air handler is about 10% more expensive than some other models with similar capabilities. However, I firmly believe in "you get what you pay for." An air handler is something that should last at least 20 years. So, it is wise to spend a little more money but get better quality.

    Good, but not GREAT

My electric bill has dropped considerably, a big plus. The temperature in the whole house remains fairly even, another plus. The only drawback is the overhead unit is LOUD....sounds like you're standing in a wind tunnel! Have had the techs out already, they did subdue the noise somewhat, but, still. It's louder than the 30 year old unit was.

    Pleased but wary.

So far, this unit is working fine, however, I have another Lennox unit that is four years old that has needed its coils replaced every year we have had it; most recently, back in May, 2021. Additionally, that unit is currently broken and I am waiting for a part to be installed. We have been without AC in that area of our home for about 10 days because this valve that ruptured lets the refrigerant vent into the atmosphere.Lennox offers a 10 year guaranty, which is nice, but having major repairs ... read more done to a new unit every single year is aggravating and inconvenient. I am currently thinking if all these breakdowns are a symptom of a bigger problem within the unit and our technicians are only fixing the symptoms. Anyway, the new unit that just got installed works well and is very quiet; I hope it does not have the quality issues that our other unit has experienced.

    Saving on electric!

So far the units are working well. My electric bill decreased by 25% so I am glad I replaced the 15 year old Lennox unit.

Motor blower air lennox handler

I have a Lennox model cbx27uh-042-230-6-03 in a house that is unoccupied but under renovation. There was a storm one evening and the A/C was inoperative the next day. There must have been a power outage with all the blinking clocks in the house. The thermostat was blanked and there was a blown fuse in the Air Handler. Once it was replaced the thermostat came to life, the condensor fired up but there was no cold air. Upon inspecting the air handler I found the fan motor inoperative. I have the Lennox service literature and followed the troubleshooting steps on page 30 of the document.

The guide states when checking the Low-Voltage Communications that there should be 24volts AC on motor taps 1-5 and (C) at the motor. I found 24volt on only one of the 5 pins. This was with the A/C active as well as with the A/C off but with the fan turned on. The motor does not turn unless I manually give it a spin and then it turns but not very fast, it seems quite weak and on the verge of stalling.

My question is this, should I have found 24volts on all 5 pins, if so, since this is not the case is the thermostat suspect?

Lennox Furnace Blower Motor Replacement #LX7920

Air Handler

An air handler, or air handling unit, is the indoor part of an air-conditioning or heat pump system. Air handlers work much like furnaces in that they efficiently move air throughout the home. The main difference is that the air handlers only circulate heat when paired with a heat pump.

Different types of motors

Like furnaces, air handlers use a blower motor and fan to move conditioned air throughout the ductwork of your home. Lennox offers air handlers with either a variable-speed or single speed blower motor:

Variable-speed motors provide the highest level of comfort and energy efficiency. They can operate at high speeds, low speeds and anywhere in between, fine-tuning airflow based on demand.

Single-speed motors operate at full capacity only and cycle on and off as needed to maintain your set household temperature.

Supplemental electric heat

Lennox® air handlers are available with an EVENHEATER® that preheats air before circulating it through your home. Heat is delivered in stages to help prevent drafts.

Filtration options

Filtration and advanced air quality components are available for most Lennox air handlers, so you can breathe clearer and healthier air.
