Shooting at Houma splash party leaves year-old dead

HOUMA, La. — Authorities say a year-old has died after he was shot several times at a “splash” party in Houma on Saturday.

According to the Houma Police Department, the shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. on block of Issac Street. Investigators say that several people were attending the splash party, and several shots were fired as the crowd was dispersing. 

Police say Emmitt Carr Jr. was struck multiple times by gunfire. Paramedics took him to the hospital for treatment. He had to be moved to an out-of-town hospital for more treatment where he later died on Sunday, police say.

Anyone who attended the splash party or knows information about the shooting is asked to call the Houma Police Department. They can also report a tip anonymously to Crimestoppers Bayou Region at or online at crimestoppersbr.org.

On January 24th, at approximately am the Houma Police Department responded to a shooting in the block of Plant Rd. Upon arrival officers located a 26 year old male victim identified as Martin Jones suffering from multiple gunshots wounds. The victim was then transported via ambulance to a local medical facility where he died as a result of his injuries.

Through investigation the suspect was identified as Sherman Ruffin 23 years of age and a warrant was obtained for his arrest in reference to one count of second degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation is in the infant stages and further details will be released at a later date and time.

Ruffin has not yet been located and anyone with information is asked to contact the Houma Police Department at or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by phone at or online at www.crimestoppersbr.org. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $1, in cash if the information leads to an arrest.

On yesterday, October 4, shortly before am Houma Police responded to a shooting that occurred at the intersection of Canal Street and Bond Street. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the shooting involved a Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s deputy. As the investigation continued Houma Police detectives arrived on scene and per request of Sheriff Tim Soignet, Houma Police investigated the incident.
During the investigation it was developed that TPSO handled a disturbance at a business on Tunnel Blvd where a subject was wielding a knife. He was identified as Shane E. Hartman of Cleveland, Tennessee, but he resided in a hotel in New Iberia.
When TPSO deputies responded, they disarmed the Shane Hartman of the knife, he was checked out by medical personnel and released. Shortly thereafter, a second complaint came in of Hartman impeding traffic. At this point contact was made again by TPSO deputies and Hartman requested to be transported to a business within the city limits.
When deputies arrived at the business, Shane Hartman refused to exit the patrol vehicle. At this point a struggle ensued between Hartman and deputies where he disarmed a deputy of a taser. At this point a struggle ensued, shots were fired striking Hartman in his upper torso, as well as the deputy in the hand. Both were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Later during the day, Houma Police learned that Shane Hartman succumbed to the injuries sustained from the shooting. Houma Police also learned that the TPSO deputy received moderate injuries to his hand.
At this point, this investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as it develops.

Police: Tennessee man fatally shot in struggle with Terrebonne deputy

HOUMA, La. — Authorities say a Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office deputy fatally shot a Tennessee man following a struggle for the deputy's taser in Houma on Monday.

According to the Houma Police Department, the shooting happened shortly before a.m. at Canal and Bond streets.

Police say the deputy was originally investigating a disturbance at a business on Tunnel Blvd where a person was wielding a knife.

Police say deputies disarmed Shane Hartman and he was checked out by paramedics. Shortly later, they say they received a second complaint that Hartman was blocking traffic. Hartman asked the deputy to take him to another business in the city's limits. 

"When deputies arrived at the business, Shane Hartman refused to exit the patrol vehicle. At this point, a struggle ensued between Hartman and deputies where he disarmed a deputy of his taser," the police department said.

Houma police say shots were fired during the struggle, striking Hartman in the upper torso and the deputy in the hand. HPD said that Hartman later died from his injuries from the shooting. The deputy was treated for "moderate injuries" to his hand.

Police say Hartman was a resident of Cleveland, Tennesee, but was living in a hotel in New Iberia.
